Clubs/Activities

The Ambassadors are the hosts and hostesses for HMS. They explore various service projects in the community with the goal of helping others. The primary service project is the Adopt a Grandparent Program with Knollwood Retirement Center, where the ambassadors visit monthly to spend time with their "grandparents".

Students have the opportunity to join the HMS band program starting in the fifth grade. Fifth and sixth grade bands are beginner level where students learn the basic fundamentals of learning to read music, notes, rhythms and to improve their proficiency/technique on their instruments. Band students entering in their seventh grade year participate in the Handley High School Marching Band.

Our band program performs in numerous ways - concerts, Solo & Ensemble, adjudicated events, athletic events, parades, etc. Important to the core of what we do is promotion of every student’s ability to achieve, to belong, and grow as musicians. Through the many opportunities we are afforded in our program, students also have a wide breadth of experiences from which to develop personally and as leaders. 

• The HT News team is a morning announcement team. The student-led team appears on camera, speaks on-air, or assists with behind-the-scenes production. Announcements are broadcast live within the school building each morning.

We are believers in Christ. Thus, we love the Lord Jesus Christ and endeavor to give Him "the first place in all things" (Col. 1:18). Our desire is to cooperate with Him for the accomplishment of God's eternal purpose (Eph. 3:11) by ministering the unsearchable riches of Christ (Eph. 3:8) for the building up of the Body of Christ (Eph. 4:12). We warmly receive all believers in Christ and seek to maintain the oneness of the Spirit by keeping our focus on Christ. He is so rich! He is so full! He is everything to us, and we enjoy Him.

The Handley Middle School Math Team is an organization that comes together to practice math and train for competitions. The team consists of eighth-graders who meet after school one day a week to work together to solve Algebra 1 problems to prepare for math competitions.

The National Junor Honor Society is an organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. To become a member of the National Junior Honor Society the following guidelines must be met:

• Must be entering 7th or 8th grade in the upcoming school year
• Must have been enrolled at HMS for 12 weeks (or one trimester)
• Must have an 88 (not rounded) overall average in core subjects (does not include P.E., Band, Exploratory)
• Must have no more than one infraction that resulted in the following types of discipline: ISS, External Suspension, or Saturday school
• Must have no more than two infractions that resulted in Friday school
• Must receive majority vote (5 of 9) from advisory council Students must maintain his or her membership. Grades and infractions are checked each trimester. Failure to maintain the guidelines of the National Junior Honor Society could result in probation or suspension of membership.

Handley Middle School has four competition robotics teams that provide students the opportunity to design and build robots to compete in the current season’s VEX IQ Challenge. The purpose of the robotics program is to enhance students’ science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills through hands-on, student-centered learning. Furthermore, the robotics program fosters the development of teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills required to prepare the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.

Handley Middle School Student Council members are elected each year during democratic class and school elections. Class representatives are required to maintain an overall A/B average, be responsible enough to attend morning meetings or activities, and demonstrate good behavior. This service organization conducts many community-related projects such as Christmas for Kids, Ronald McDonald House, and Bike Hike.

The Tiger Bean is a mobile coffee cart designed to provide hands-on learning experiences based on the Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards. Students take on the role of student baristas in which they organize, prep, and fill orders. Provide door to door delivery and clean and organize supplies. Our students benefit from hands-on learning, collaboration, and learn functional, social, job and daily living skills.

The HMS Yearbook staff is a group of 7th and 8th-grade students who work collaboratively to document, through pictures and captions, the school year into a published yearbook.

Yearbooks can be purchased in two different ways:

1. Through the school- Fill out your child's yearbook form and place it and the money in an envelope and return it to school to Mrs. Jones or a Yearbook Staff Member.
2. Online at www.jostensyearbooks.com - Go to this website. In the center of the page click Buy a Yearbook. On the next page Type Handley Middle School. Select our school.
