History of Handley Middle School

The Foundation (1996)

In the early 20th century, Handley Mills sold Handley Elementary School to Roanoke City Schools. The upper grades of Handley Elementary became Handley Middle School (HMS). HMS has been a cornerstone of education in our community. The school was established to meet the growing educational needs of the area and to provide a nurturing and academically enriching environment for students.

2007: A Vision Realized - A New Middle School and Library Addition

In 2007, Handley Middle School took a significant step forward by creating a library addition. These developments marked an important milestone in the school's history, further enhancing the quality of education offered to students. The modern facilities allowed for the expansion of educational opportunities and resources, setting the stage for an even brighter future.

2023: Pioneering STEM Education

In 2023, Handley Middle School made a remarkable leap in advancing its educational programs. The addition of a state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) lab to the campus exemplified the school's commitment to fostering innovation and preparing students for the challenges of the future. The STEM lab provided a dedicated space for hands-on learning, experimentation, and exploration in these critical fields, equipping students with valuable skills and knowledge.

The Evolution of HMS

Handley Middle School has continually evolved and adapted to meet the changing educational landscape and the needs of its students. From a new facility and location for 4th to 8th-grade students in 1996, to the expansion of library facilities in 2007 and the introduction of cutting-edge STEM education in 2023, HMS has remained dedicated to its mission of providing an exceptional educational experience for its students.

Today, Handley Middle School continues to be a beacon of academic excellence and innovation, preparing students for a bright future while cherishing its rich history and tradition of fostering personal and academic growth.
